Hermine was known as a good-humoured, independent woman throughout her long life. Her simple pleasures were watching baseball and curling, playing cards and darts, and observing the peculiarities of her canary, Sweetie, and moody cat, Pew. Hermine was a loyal friend and family member, maintaining letter and phone correspondence with loved ones across decades. Her youngest sister, Sylvia, followed suit for a brief time, and together they experienced the city night life together as single women. In the footsteps of her sister Matilda, Hermine later moved to Montreal and worked as a bookkeeper at the Stagecoach Inn Restaurant. As a young adult, Hermine and her siblings moved to New Waterford with their mother, where she worked as a bank teller for RBC. She grew up on Forest Street and always maintained an enthusiastic connection to Inverness. Born in Inverness, Nova Scotia, in 1924, Hermine was the child of Matilda Gillis (Margaree) and Joseph Getto (Hungary). Family members stayed close to her bedside, holding her hand and expressing their love, in her final days. Peter built his own business, Port Hood Woodworkers, through which he established a reputation for high-quality craftsmanship. Following a period in Western Canada, Peter and his then wife Lynnie Mae Paulsen moved to Glencoe, Cape Breton, where they raised their two sons. His older brother, Kenneth James Alexander Brookes (deceased 2011) brought Peter to Canada in 1967. Peter was the youngest of two sons to Beatrice Alma Pymer and Kenneth James Brookes from England. Peter is survived by his two loving sons Thomas Francis Brookes and Matthew Martin Brookes with wife Laura and their children Madelyn, Mya, Mackenzie, and Henry.

Peter passed peacefully after a lengthy battle with heart complications. She is survived by her loving husband, Ian, of 53 years sons Gerald (Tracy) of Sackville, Jason (partner Kim) of Port Hood, and Gillis (Lise) of Upper Tantallon her four grandchildren, Brianne, Lila, Shea-Leigh, and Mason her siblings Dolly (Ken), Les (Carolyn) of Bellville, Ontario, and Kevin (Ann Marie) of Port Hood.
